My TEDx eXperience

Jason Lim

Well ladies and gentlemen, finally I have some time to sit down and reflect on my TED Talk. First and foremost, it was an instant privilege to have been selected to be a Presenter of TEDx. To my knowledge, TEDx was for “really” successful people and initially when I was called up, I honestly thought TEDx called up the wrong person. But hey, I could live with that ;), but to my surprise, they did not call up the wrong person. Wasn’t that a pleasant surprise ;) During the course of the preparation for my talk, I have to admit that it was a tedious process of preparation and formalities. Being completely aware of the person that I am, there is no formalities, there is no rehearsals, no preparations, I just do what I want, and so that was a little tricky to begin with. Finally my Team and I have finalised the preparation of my Talk and I spent days writing a script for my talk. Mind you, out of all my Live Talk Shows or Pre Recorded Talks or Interviews, I have never ever written a script and for me to actually come up with a script and to memorize it was beyond suicidal as many may already know, I’m unpredictable and spontaneous. So the day quickly came, when it was finally time for me to reluctantly perform a full scale rehearsal on the day before as it’s a Big No No for me as I don't fancy rehearsals and I don’t interact well with empty chairs. So technically, I messed up my rehearsal, like really messed it up as I was trying to desperately memorize 20 pages of text, which was literally 0% Jason Lim and 100% robot. Well, I was obviously annoyed and ticked off at why the empty chairs didn’t give me any response or a standing ovation. So I went back and jammed my entire speech down a shredder. So no more memorizing, no more trying to remember 20 pages, only me, only Jason Lim. The Real Jason Lim ;)

So the next day came in a blink of an eye. Was I nervous, of course not, I was beyond nervous when I saw the approximately 1500 people seated on the empty chairs yesterday and I told myself, these people better be better than the empty chairs I was talking to yesterday. So it was time for my Talk, my crew did the final preparations to prepped me up, and I walked onto the stage empty handed ;) Never have I felt less burdened than to a walk up on stage to recite a bloody encyclopedia.

The Three things that I've remembered right after my Talk was, first I walked onstage, the crowd was magnificent, I then took a deep breath and did my final prayer hoping to deliver my message with finesse. And after my short prayer, I honestly couldn’t remember a thing and the last I saw was a standing ovation of nearly 1500 people.

So there you go, how my Talk was, I clearly remember the things offstage, by if you ask me what happened on stage, frankly speaking, I couldn’t recall much and that I was told was, I got everyone on their feet ;) Last but definitely not the least, my team’s dedication was phenomenal that day, I couldn’t be more proud of each and every one of my team members and the TEDx Crew as they exceeded my expectations by literally a mile. To my Personal Assistants, Public Relations, Security Crew and Make-up Crew, it’s a job well done ;) To my friends and supporters that made it for my Talk, your presence is my sole driving force to why I go way beyond my boundaries and limits to produce films for change. And as for the TEDx organisers, curators and crew, being the Extremely Particular Person that I am, I’m sorry to say that you Didn’t do a good job, you did a GREAT Job!!!
